Drinking in the midday heat can be more dehydrating and therefore more intoxicating. With a few strategies, you can enjoy rooftop and poolside gatherings this summer without overdoing it.

Expert insight: 

Craft your cocktails wisely, says Leigh Weissman, a sommelier and the New York City-based food and beverage manager at Equinox. Using coconut water as a base will provide electrolytes, which regulate your body temp and stave off heat-induced fatigue. 

Another smart option: Add liquor to summer spritzers rather than drinking martinis or wine. The non-alcoholic fluids will help keep you hydrated, Weissman notes. Sugar-heavy beverages, on the other hand, have the opposite effect. 

Food-wise, opt for healthy fats and fiber to slow alcohol absorption and keep drunkenness at bay, she says. Try a veggie avocado egg wrap for breakfast and snack on nuts, hummus, or guacamole throughout the day. 

The bottom line: 

If you choose only one rule to follow, Weissman suggests you drink at least eight ounces of water per alcoholic beverage.
