My holiday party: Julia Turshen

How the cookbook author hosts a festive soirée

For best-selling cookbook author Julia Turshen, the day after hosting a dinner party may be just as delicious as the evening itself. The illustrious home cook recently released her third book, Now & Again, which was inspired by her love of reinventing leftovers.

“It’s a book of menus with simple recipes along with tons of ideas for things to do with the leftovers,” she says of the title, which is ideal for casual weeknight dinners and large gatherings alike.

Turshen’s newest book joins Small Victories, a compilation of over 400 recipes, and Feed the Resistance, a “handbook for political activism” peppered with recipes and essays.

Here, Turshen imagines her dream holiday party.

on the menu

“My favorite thing about hosting dinner parties is bringing people together, so the meal would definitely be served family-style. I would serve roast chicken, potato pancakes, applesauce, sour cream, a big salad, and the applesauce cake from Now & Again for dessert.”

what we’re drinking

“Tons of red wine. Preferably something rich and memorable and made by a thoughtful winemaker—look no further than Inconnu wines.”

the decor

“My wife [Grace Bonney, author of In the Company of Women and founder of the magazine Good Company] sets out the table.”

the guest list

“In attendance would be my wife, our pets, our friends and their dogs, and family, too, which I believe has a very flexible definition—a huge table.”

what we’re listening to

“We would definitely have Cécile McLorin Salvant's new album The Window on the record player.”
