Try It: Setting Sprays

In addition to helping makeup stick, they can prevent sun damage.

In our daily news series, experts address some of the latest fitness research, nutrition, style, and health stories.

THE SCIENCE
Along with rising rates of melanoma, new research shows that incidences of a rare but highly aggressive skin cancer called merkel cell carcinoma are also increasing. Sunscreen is still your best defense against both, but you can now stay protected while also capitalizing on a current beauty trend: SPF in the form of a setting spray. These sprays can act as primer for your makeup, control oil and shine, and refresh the skin all while defending against UV rays.

EXPERT INSIGHT

“Setting sprays with an SPF label contain the same active ingredients as traditional sunscreens and theoretically should undergo the same testing to ensure that they give the protective factor contained on the label,” says Shilesh Iyer, MD, dermatologist with the New York Dermatology Group in New York City, adding that consumers should look for an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreens in setting sprays can be one of two types: chemical or physical. “Physical blockers act by providing a thin physical barrier that protects the skin against sunlight,” says Iyer. This type could last longer than a chemical spray (which works by absorbing UV radiation) or even a physical cream because the spray can be more effectively locked into place.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Like traditional cream-based versions, SPF-infused setting sprays should be applied evenly and often and used in combination with makeup that contains SPF for full protection. Try Kate Somerville’s UncompliKated spray, which offers SPF 50 while also mattifying the face. Or opt for this one from COOLA that’s infused with cucumber and aloe vera extracts to soothe the skin.
