If you're in town for Art Basel, put these 6 places on your itinerary.
Between the crowds, the parties, the music and other stimuli, Miami during Art Basel can get overwhelming—unless you shoehorn in some rejuvenation and relaxation during your visit. It’s easier than ever to do that, however, as this South Florida party city boasts an increasing number of fitness options for visitors and tons of restaurants that make organic, local ingredients a menu priority. Here are some of the best options for recharging your body and mind while experiencing Miami’s perfect winter weather and unique culture.
(1) THE HOTEL: FAENA HOTEL MIAMI BEACH
Even if you don’t stay here, the new Faena Hotel spa and restaurants in Mid-Beach are worth a visit. The Tierra Santa Spa offers sacred South American-inspired healing body treatments including massage with Palo Santo oil, used in purification ceremonies in South America, and sound bowls meant to restore natural frequencies of the body and mind. Or try a massage on a heated sand bed with Tierra Santa oils or purifying hammam (Turkish steam) bath. Holistic health consultants on site offer detox treatments and acupuncture as well.
(2) THE OUTDOORS: BISCAYNE BAY NATIONAL PARK
If you’re willing to break away from the art scene for some outdoor adventures, Sailboards Miami and South Beach Kayak can hook you up with a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) to tour a hidden mangrove estuary, Grove Isles, The Sister Islands Sand Bar and Key Biscayne. Laze on Key Biscayne’s beautiful, tranquil beaches, or hike Elliott Key, the largest key north of Key Largo. Check out tropical fish, coral reefs and shipwrecks snorkeling or diving in the Biscayne Bay’s crystal clear water.
(3) THE BOUTIQUE: FITBOX METHOD
Blend with the locals in a fitness studio you’ll only find in Miami: Fitbox Method classes combine boxing with high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Instructors bring students’ heart rates to the brink and down again with a series of drills in which you’ll toss medicine balls and ride a bike in addition to 30 minutes of boxing training. Grab a juice at Pura Veda Express to recharge before hitting the galleries.
(4) THE WELLNESS HUB: WYNWOOD YARD
Vibrant, artsy Wynwood Yard, a “food, fitness, music and cultural gathering place,” as its website describes it, just celebrated its first anniversary. Pop-up bars feature small-batch beers and craft cocktails, and locals love the healthy, hearty bowls by della’s test kitchen and Mr. Bing’s shaved ice cream. Peruse the handmade shampoos, deodorants and healing oils of Radiate Apothecary, check out the dance area and garden, or sign up for the Ahana Flow class Liz Grant will teach on December 1. In addition to Grant’s class, Wynwood Garden has a packed lineup of Art Basel events, including guided meditation, panel discussions and wellness workshops.
(5) THE GRAB-AND-GO: GROWN
Created by Shannon Allen, wife of former NBA champion and Miami Heat player Ray Allen, Grown offers organic, sustainable local meals on the go. A great option if you want a weekday meal fast, Grown offers cold-pressed juices, smoothies, soups, salads, sandwiches and breakfast (including gluten-free blueberry pancakes and homemade granola) in eco-conscious packaging. Cruise through Grown’s drive-thru or eat on its pleasant patio, where you might spot the Allens in person.
(6) THE SIT-DOWN: PLANT FOOD & WINE MIAMI
Celebrated chef Matthew Kenney teaches raw food culinary classes next door to his plant-based Wynwood restaurant. Sit among palm trees by the reflecting pool on the patio for brunch or lunch, and enjoy organic wine and sake or a detox drink or juice. Dinner entrees are creative and nutrient-packed: Try the banana leaf tamale with cacao mole and avocado, heirloom grains with kale and black lentils, bahn mi lettuce wraps with smoked chili-almond pate or coconut ceviche tacos with sunflower chorizo and lime crema.
