Do Vegans Need Different Skincare?
Yes, your diet should determine your skincare.
Having good complexion is often the result of a balanced diet. Thus, it's important to consider how your specific diet—mainly, whether it is low or high in protein and water—might show itself in your reflection. Here are a few prescriptions from Washington, D.C.-based dermatologist Terrence Keaney (who's also a skincare consultant for Dove Men+Care); use his advice to adjust your skincare routine based on personal eating behaviors.
IF: You're vegetarian or vegan
THEN: Your diet is light in proteins, and your cells won’t naturally get the support they need from amino acids. “Since the skin, hair, and nails have some of the most active cells in our body, they require a steady supply of amino acids,” says Keaney. “As an example, the skin turns over every two weeks. Protein-deficient skin is dry, brittle and easily injured.”
SO: Use heavier, lipid-packed moisturizers, such as ceramides. As an added measure, incorporate peptide-rich skincare products into your daily routine. (Keaney prescribes them for their short chains of amino acids.)
IF: You’re detoxing or briefly fasting
THEN: Your skin (like your body) might get dehydrated.
SO: In addition to drinking lots of water (one of the most important steps to healthy skin and hair), Keaney says you'll want to incorporate an extra-hydrating moisturizer or serum that contains hyaluronic acid into your routine on these days.
