Upgrade Your Tennis Whites
This classic hue never goes out of style.
From cobalt fashion to neon sneakers, activewear is brighter than ever. Yet, in tennis, white still reigns: “There are clubs, tournaments, and venues that still maintain a strict ‘all tennis whites’ dress code—Wimbledon is, of course, the most famous,” says Karin Burgess, founder of the tennis-meets-fashion blog Tennis Identity.
We see pieces from big name brands like Nike, Adidas, Lacoste and Fila the most. But Burgess says there are lesser-known—equally as great—tennis whites on the market. Refresh your head-to-toe look with these pro-approved pieces:
inPhorm Tennis Gored dress, $112.50
Luxe whites from inPhorm are both fashionable and eco-forward, made in ways that minimize energy consumption. Functional features such as built-in bras and breathable fabrics are complemented by cut-out design and other stylish touches. You can usually see items from this line in action on Alla Kudryavtseva, the women’s No. 134 player in the world.
EleVen by Venus Love tank, $56
“Being designed by a pro tennis player, you know these are made to move well,” Burgess says of Venus Williams’ line of tennis gear (which she wore at Wimbledon). “EleVen collections are vast and accommodate the style requirements of many different body types,” she adds.
Chrissie by Tail White Bibi skort, $77
During her day, legendary tennis player Chris Evert won 18 grand slam titles. Today, she’s collaborating with Tail Activewear to craft a line of women’s tennis wear, peppered with white options that are ideal for the fierce competitor seeking a flair of fashion.
Sergio Tacchini Master short, $44
Sergio Tacchini is a classic tennis brand with roots in the early days of the sport’s expansion from whites into color, says Burgess. But it’s fair to say the designer has also mastered the white. Expect style and creativity (as seen in clean designs like dark green trim and the trademark logo) from this Italian company.
Travis Mathew Pearl Hat, $30
The modern man will get hooked on Travis Mathew’s SoCal vibe and minimalistic design, which is favored by tennis stars like Andy Roddick and James Blake. Wear it off or on the court: The company’s RED line is field-tested by athletes, ensuring your sweat doesn't stand a chance. The hat also features a mesh snap-back, which is becoming trendy again.
Vollaix Ponte Vedre Polo Shirt, $45
What started as a tennis wear collection 30 years ago transformed into a timeless brand paying homage to vintage styles with a modern touch. Vollaix’s summer line is named after great tennis landmarks in Florida, like The Ponte Vedre Inn and Club.
