4 Upscale Training Camps
Kickstart summer sports season with in-depth programs at these luxurious spots.
We're this close to officially kicking off the start of summer, but there's still time master your warm weather sport of choice. Whether you’re looking to take on a bike race, become a proficient surfer before your beach house begins, or master your backhand, there are a number of luxury resorts that specifically cater to those whose fitness goals outweigh their wanderlust. And although these destinations do offer some relaxing moments, the main reason for attending is to lock in huge days of training. Here's where you can act like a professional athlete for a few days:
Surfing Kalon Surf School, Costa Rica
Visitors are whisked via private shuttle from San Jose to Dominical, a popular surf town in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica. You’ll check into any number of ocean-view rooms and suites in a jungle mansion, then head out in small groups (from novice to advanced) to partake in 4-hour surf sessions. Offshore, you’ll be able to view your progress via video analysis and feedback, and enjoy a massage or Pilates. No need to haul your board across time zones; equipment (along with sunblock) is provided.
Triathlon The BodyHoliday Quadrathon, St. Lucia
Billed as a “test of stamina, strength and fitness,” BodyHoliday’s weekly Quadrathon takes you on an island challenge, including a 13K bike ride and a 4K run, followed by kayaking 1.5 miles along the north coast of St. Lucia and back to the resort. If you're using your stay as training sessions for a longer upcoming race, consult with the on-hand nutritionist to figure out how to maximize your energy intake.
Golf Sea Island, GA
Instructors at the three 18-hole championship courses within Sea Island Golf Club (part of Georgia’s Golden Isles) work with many PGA Tour players. And while you might not be a pro, you can still get access to their expertise via multi-day packages featuring a variety of workshops and courses, as well as unlimited play. Ship your clubs to and from so you don’t have to deal with checking them, and enjoy after-round drinks and dinner at any number of the resort’s gourmet restaurants post-golf. Spend an afternoon at the spa or soaking in the sun along the resort’s beach club, which abuts five miles of private oceanfront.
TENNIS Broadmoor Tennis Camp
Many think of Colorado as the country’s premier skiing destination, but tennis players in the know head to this Colorado Springs resort and enroll in Adult Tennis Camp to fine-tune their swings. Only 12 participants are allowed each window (packages are three days, two nights) and get 12 hours of intensive instruction (4:1 player to coach ratio), fast-paced drills, two days of supervised match play, video analysis of their game, and spa amenities. Private tennis camps are also available, and all feature luxury accommodations and meals.
