My Dinner Party: Patricia Chang
The handbag designer plans the perfect New Year's Eve party.
Patricia Chang has one of those must-follow Instagram accounts. In addition to showcasing her playful handbag line (the collection features small clutches in cheeky shapes such as donuts, pizza, and small animals.), the account also shows off Chang and her family’s adventures in New York City. One recurring type of photo that shows up in her feed is the fabulous tablescapes from the gatherings Chang hosts. From a Thanksgiving feast to a festive brunch, Chang designs a beautiful table. “I’m not a cook, so I try to make up for it by setting a nice table,” she says. We asked Chang to give us a sneak peek at her New Year’s Eve party.
On the menu
"For New Year's, the meal will have a twist. I usually serve it as a starter, but the charcuterie platter will be our main course tonight. It’ll include a colorful spread of meats, cheeses, vegetables and fruits. My husband will also make his signature baked ziti dish, which will add some heartiness to the meal and fit in nicely with the Italian menu."
What We're Drinking
"We love any excuse to pop a bottle of Champagne! We’ll have a variety of spirits to cater to our guests’ preferences, including non-alcoholic alternatives. Rosy pink drinks add a little flare to the festive vibe so, this year, we’ll be preparing a blackberry and thyme lemonade spritzer. Berry and herb garnishes not only go a long way, but are an easy and elegant touch."
"You eat with your eyes first so décor and atmosphere are key. If you decide not to decorate, at least make sure your venue is pristine. I’ll be setting my table with flowers, candles, and my collection of both antique and modern, whimsical plates. I'll also browse Pinterest for chic and playful ideas that use balloons and gold sparkly cocktail stirrers. New Year’s Eve is all about celebrating and I want my guests to feel celebrated!"
The Guest List
"Our guests will be a warm gathering of close friends both old and new—so much a part of our lives that they feel more like extended family. We love that they love a good time and always keep the conversation and laughter flowing...a sure sign of any memorable evening."
What We're Listening To
"We've been turning on Bossa Nova lately. It sets the mood, and you can still have conversations over it. If our one-and-a-half year old is still awake, per his request, it may switch to pop music so he can dance."
