Miami's Rooftop Scene
In time for Art Basel , we've rounded up the best rooftops for healthy hobnobbing.
As Art Basel Miami swings into high gear this week—and the streets of Miami Beach teem with collectors and gallerists along with the usual fashion-forward crowd—it’s a relief to get above it all on one of the city’s rooftops. But for a city by the sea, there aren't too many to choose from. Herewith, the best places to soak up the winter sun with an aperitif (or smoothie) in hand.
The Spa: Metropolitan by Como
For yoga, a soak or a smoothie, this new hotel’s rooftop spa is a respite from sticky South Beach; the highlights are a muscle-relaxing hydrotherapy pool and yoga platform with views of the Atlantic. Book a one-on-one class in pranayama breathing, yoga or meditation, or nip into one of the treatment rooms for a fragrant deep-tissue massage.
The Sundowner Spot: Gale South Beach’s Roof Deck
With its four floors and reasonable rates for 87 rooms, the newish Gale hotel isn’t the tallest hotel in Miami or the fanciest—but it’s quietly cool, with a vintagey vibe and simple white rooftop pool that gets sun all day long. Which is why it’s a nice warm place for an early evening aperitif. It's across the street from the beach but still has views of the Atlantic, which are especially nice at dusk.
The Afternoon Pitstop: Rooftop at the Townhouse in South Beach
There’s a hushed insider quality to this rooftop bar, which serves drinks from the morning on and sits smack dab in the center of South Beach. With its simple white lounge chairs, teak decking and red umbrellas, it feels calming and cool—especially with the breeze coming in off the ocean (it’s a two-minute walk from the beach).
The Club: Soho Beach House's Rooftop Pool
Soho Beach House’s eighth-floor rooftop pool is a haven from Miami Beach madness for three reasons: It’s open only to those staying in the 50 hotel rooms and Soho House members (plus a few lucky friends); a good chunk of those people favor the larger pool on the ground floor; and the place is in Mid Beach, a bit north of the South Beach hubbub. Cool down in the plunge pool or chill out in a cushioned, covered sunbed.
The Pre-Dinner Place: Juvia
Atop the most stylish parking garage you’ve ever seen at the Herzog & De Meuron-designed 1111 Lincoln Road, Juvia is near the western edge of Miami Beach—so in evenings, it has glittering views of the island’s skyline, with the ocean in the distance. Stop in to start a night out with bites of burrata and cured salmon paired with the requisite mojitos.
