I hurt my back deadlifting, and I’ve been in pain for about 3 days. Did I do real damage? — Taryn N via email
If the pain is not going into the legs and there’s no numbness or tingling, it’s most likely a muscular back strain or sprain. The most effective treatment is skillful deep tissue manipulation. I’ve actually experienced this pain myself and was treated by a chiropractor. Good chiropractors know a lot about muscle physiology, and what they do is break up the reactive spasm that’s occurring around an injury point.
I would add some anti-inflammatories and light stretching and stay off your routine for a week or two, and then you’re back at it.
