Ready to start juicing? "Most Americans are extremely deficient in vegetable intake, especially dark leafy greens," says Maria Pagano, RD, and Equinox Tier 4 personal training manager. "Greens increase the alkalinity of your blood, which is good since most of our diets are rich in protein and grains, which are very acidic." If you like your potions sweet, choose a drink with fruit, such as apple or pineapple. For a more tart taste, experiment with lemon and ginger. To get started, try a recipe from some of our favorite juice bars and nutritionists:
Joulebody's Green Juice
1 c. leafy greens (i.e., kale, Swiss chard, collard)
1 c. green grapes
½ c. apple juice
1 tsp. maca
1 tsp. chia seeds
½ c. water
Put all ingredients in juicer; add maca and chia for protein and fiber.
Cooler Cleanse's Essential Green Juice
Handful of spinach
2 medium stalks celery
Small handful parsley, long stems removed
3 medium stalks kale
2 Bartlett pears
1 lemon, cut and peeled
Process all the ingredients through the juicer. Run any wet pulp back through the juicer. Scrape off the foam and serve over ice. For variation, add dandelion greens or watercress.
Celeb Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's Glowing Green Juice
1 bunch kale
2-3 celery stalks
Juice of 1 small lemon
Run all ingredients through a juicer.
Puree Artisan Juice Bar's Green Goddess
1 c. spinach
1 c. kale
2 c. romaine lettuce
1 c. celery
Juice all greens first, then add fruit.
